Andrew and the MTA

Andrew's passion is NYC buses and it's routes. He has literally memorized all the 20-30 bus routes in Manhattan. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is his favorite website. We started riding buses as a family to avoid the strangeness of the subway and danger of taxis a few years ago. Little did we know that this would ignite the flame of Andrew's geographic astuteness. He spends hours looking at bus routes, role-playing with his toys, and drawing maps from memory. He even sounds like the conductor, "This 14th Street, Union Square, transfer available to the N, R, W, and L trains..." He did a Show and Tell presentation at school a few weeks ago that really impressed his teachers and classmates. I wonder what this will lead to for Andrew in the future. Perhaps a career in the MTA? More likely, some spatially oriented occupation. How often we compromise our passions for something more pragmatic. I want my children to follow their dreams and their hearts desires. This has been one of my philosophies in child-rearing and their education. I hope to stay true to this endeavor. But in any case, it's a such a joy to see one's child grow and excel in their passion.
